a Biodiverse small farm design

A detailed map of a nature and garden area with numbered sections, trees, ponds, and pathways, along with a section of text describing the area's features, vision statement, and ecological focus.

This project was a design for a regenerative farm and biodiverse home on a wild and beautiful landscape in Pembrokeshire.

Alongside the design drawings and detailed report I also included mentoring time to help the clients get started with some of the different systems, such as composting strategies and agroforestry planting and care.

The design

The design included a huge variety of edible and medicinal plants, shrubs and trees in a variety of different systems. Forest gardens, agroforestry planting on contour, orchards, coppice plantations, shelterbelts, hedgerows and a nut orchard were all placed in different spaces within the landscape depending on sunlight, shelter and access. A wild swimming pond and camping area were integrated for enjoyment and retreats, and the whole site was sensitively designed in deep respect of the surrounding environment and rich wildlife.

design detail

This shows a close up view of some of the more intensive systems, including species suggestions and planting guilds. A much more detailed planting guide and species list was included in the design report.

Design Report

The design report in this case included a full site survey, an overview of the vision and patterns of the design, a detailed overview of all the systems, a recommended order of implementation, approximate costings, a species list, planting advice and calendar, recommended suppliers, and learning resources and further support.
